What is Sickle Cell?

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. Instead of round, flexible cells, affected red blood cells become rigid and crescent-shaped, which can block blood flow and cause pain, infections, and organ damage.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms can vary from person to person and may include painful crises, fatigue, anemia, swelling in the hands and feet, frequent infections, and delayed growth in children. Many warriors also experience complications that require ongoing medical care.
